Not one who has a skilled stunt double, but one who has great reserves of internal strength and ingenuity to survive once forced in to abhorrent circumstances. While those films are stylized action silliness, with a 100lb woman beating up 200lb men and performing ridiculous stunts, Red Sparrow shows what a truly strong woman is. The comparisons made between this film and other female led spy films such as Atomic Blond, are disingenuous and inaccurate. Dominika is a strong and intelligent woman and a good, dare I say "feminist", role model for women when it comes to many admirably qualities including intelligence, perseverance and stamina. However I do not think this film gets enough credit for positive representations. Simply put, this film is exclusively for an adult audience. The torture scenes are also quite disturbing. The violence, especially sexual violence is harrowing and pervasive and there is copious nudity and adult content to be had. That said I further recommend that you know, as Dominika did not, what you are getting into. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and recommended it, as well as the book to anyone seeking a realistic espionage story. Acting performances from Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton are Academy Award worthy. The story is brilliant, fast paced and adrenaline charged. Based on real people and assignments from Matthew's career, this is one of the most accurate and honest spy stories available. Based on the novel by CIA veteran Jason Matthews, Red Sparrow is among the best espionage/thriller films I have ever seen.
